Toothache

Douggles isn't doing much these days. There's a stubborn toothache I've tried and failed to drown in aspirin. The pain levels ride up and down like a rollercoaster, making ordinary arts & entertainment null & void.

With no dental insurance since my 18th birthday, my mouth is full of rot & decay & missing teeth. One more tooth's gotta go, maybe two, because having teeth yanked costs lots less than having teeth repaired. The good news is, I'm registered for an "emergency" appointment on Saturday morning. The bad news is, the price means I gotta cancel my Scandinavian ski trip.

Crossing the Okanogan River

— July 24, 2025 — 

This weekend I'm headed to the Breshears family reunion in Omak, which is about 150 miles outside my comfort zone. I'm a hermit, antisocial and generally happiest alone, so surrounding myself with people who are, sorry to say, basically strangers sharing some distant DNA, is potentially going to be weird. The great blessing of being a pessimist, though, is that things usually turn out better than I'd expected, so maybe it'll be a blast.

Oh, and I'm not bringing my phone or laptop, so I'll be out of email or text contact until Sunday night.

Other than Omak, most of the week will be in my recliner.

On Tuesday 7/29, Anderson School in Bothell is hosting a history of hydroplane racing in Seattle, but… it's in Bothell, and that's a long bus ride.

Pee-wee's Big Adventure is playing at Central Cinema, and I might go. Or I might just hit 'play', since it's in my video library.

Breakfast is next Frdiay, 8/1. Please let me know if you're coming. 

As always, I'll try to get to a protest or two. What Trump & the Republicans are doing is beyond politics — cruelty, corruption, unConstitutional, unAmerican, the opposite of Christianity, and I'm not OK with it.

Breakfast at Little Pat's on Tuesday 7/22  

You've been lying awake nights wondering what Doug's up to next? Is that what's troublin' you, Bunky?

Well, relax, here's Doug to tell you all about it...

Today, Thursday 7/17, I'm headed to West Seattle, where I'll futilely hold a placard trying to rouse my fellow Americans. As Humphrey Bogart says in Casablanca, though, "I bet they’re asleep in America..."

Friday 7/18, there's breakfast at Little Pat's. Mum & Pop said to keep your elbows off the table, though I never understood why and still don't. Just keep your elbows somewhere between your shoulders and wrists, please.

Over the weekend there's the Strawberry Festival on Vashon Island, and I like strawberries so I'm intrigued. It's a ferry ride followed by a bus ride, though, and would take longer getting there and back than I'd spend eating the strawberries and being festive and all, so it's probably not happening unless you're going. More likely I'll be protesting again.

On Tuesday 7/22, nothing could be finer than adult coloring time at the Fremont Library. Stay within the lines if you wish, but I have a hard time even keeping my Crayola on the table.

Wednesday 7/23, I'm looking forward to losing to a random 10-year-old at Orlov Chess Academy.

I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree, and on Thursday 7/24 there's poetry in the park at Meadowbrook Pond. If the poems suck, hey, at least there'll be trees.

No, I'm not doing all the above. But on any given morning, if my mood is right and the stars align and especially if you're coming with me, I might do something off the list.
