Comics, cartoons, piano, and protests

July 10, 2025

We're all old, not too much time left, so if you'd like to get together just say the word. Here's what I might be up to this week...

Tonight, Thursday the 10th, there's prohibition-era piano jazz in a prohibition-era bar, the Jules Maes Saloon in Georgetown. Pretty sure I'll be there, tapping my toes and eating one or two of their pretty good blue cheeseburgers.

On Saturday the 12th, Fantagraphics is having a book fair at their Georgetown store. Is it possible y'all don't know Fantagraphics? They publish 'literary' comics like Acme Novelty Library, Ghost World, Love & Rockets, and such. This ain't Archie in Riverdale.

A collection of Max Fleischer cartoons is now playing at Northwest Film Forum, including some Betty Boop and early-era Popeye the Sailor Man. Great stuff, from when the very idea of images moving on a screen was still radical.

Next Thursday the 17th will be one of the big protest days, so I'll be at one of the big protests, being big, and protesting. I'll come home all tuckered out, so the next once-weekly update on this page will be a day or two late.

And next Friday the 18th, there'll be breakfast. Actually, there's breakfast most days, but most days I'm not there, and Friday I will be! Have I mentioned that the chicken-fried steak is exquisite?

No, I'm not doing all the above. But on any given morning, if my mood is right and the stars align and especially if you're coming with me, I might do something off the list.

If you're family, friend, former friend, acquaintance, or simply Doug-curious, you're invited. Click the links for details, and/or drop me a note!
