Pinball, movies, museums, and more

Tuesday, July 16, 2024

Hello, anybody and everybody. I'm still fat. How are you?

Here's what's happening in the near future. You're invited to any of it that sounds like fun.

Just let me know you're coming, and we'll work out the details.

  THE BASICS:

Please RSVP so I know you're coming. All events are 'Dutch treat'. Please remember that I'm a weirdo.

This is a zero-pressure invitation. I'd love to see you, but if you can't make it my feelings won't be hurt.

We gather for breakfast twice monthly, and a monthly movie. Click for the big list of *everything* I wanna do and *everything* I wanna eat.

And here's what's happening in the next few weeks:

Open House, at NorthWest Pinball Collective
1120 North 97th Street, Licton Springs
5-9 PM • Tuesday, July 16

A few hours of pinball, completely free. They'll probably try talking us into joining the Pinball Collective, but I have a lifetime's experience saying NO to things I don't want to do.

Charade (1963)
Central Library, 4th @ Madison, Downtown
4th floor, Room 2
2:30 • Wednesday, July 17

Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant star in a slightly comedic thriller. I've never seen it, but I've heard it's great.

And it's free.

Picnic at Jack Block Park
2130 Harbor Avenue SW, Alki
11 AM • Thursday, July 18

You bring lunch for you, I'll bring lunch for me, we'll talk and maybe walk, play on the monkey bars, run through the sprinkler, whatever.

Will reschedule if the forecast calls for rain or highs above about 80° (I'm a wuss about the heat).

Breakfast at Little Pat's
13611 Ambaum Blvd SW, Burien
9:15 • Saturday, July 20

Folio, for "quiet reading"
93 Pike St #307, Pike Place Market
Noon • Saturday, July 20

They're having an open house, so I'm going to check out Folio. It seems to be a private library and reading-&-thinking club, and if it's not too snooty, I might join.

It's free, but advance registration is required for this "quiet reading" event. I'll bring a book, and you should too.

Our monthly movie is A Hard Day's Night (1964)
Noon • Sunday, July 21 (virtual)

Sampo (1959)
Northwest Film Forum
1515 12th Ave, Capitol Hill
5:30 PM • Sunday, July 21

The movie is a Russian fantasy-adventure, which was dubbed and dumbed-down and released in America as The Day the Earth Froze. Now it's been restored to the original Russian version, with subtitles.

Tickets are $14, or $10 for seniors.

I'm still working on remembering to say "Senior discount, please!" everywhere I go...

Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)
Central Library, 4th @ Madison, Downtown
4th floor, Room 2
2:30 • Wednesday, July 24

A rather good drama about the sales business, by David Mamet, with Alec Baldwin, Jack Lemmon, and Al Pacino.

Free.

Picnic at Bhy Kracke Park
1215 5th Ave North, Queen Anne
11AM • Friday, July 26

Not much is better on a sunny day than a walk in the park with a sandwich. I might make my own, but if I splurge the very best sammiches in town are from Deli-Cut Subs (300 5th Avenue, Downtown (closed Saturdays & Sundays). Let me know, and I'll bring something for you, too.

If rain or high temperatures are in the forecast, we'll reschedule.

Secret Cinema, at Beacon Cinema
4405 Rainier Avenue South, Columbia City.
5PM • Sunday, July 28

They don't tell you what the movie's going to be, so you have to be willing to take a chance. I'm willing. Are you?

A long walk on Capitol Hill
11 AM • Monday July 29

Broadway was my old stomping grounds circa 1980, and like a bad sequel I'm returning to stomp again.

We'll lunch at Dick's, probably ride the streetcar and walk Cal Anderson Park, but other than that the afternoon is wide open.

Will reschedule if the forecast calls for rain or highs above about 80° (I'm a wuss about the heat).

Seattle Center
305 Harrison Street, Uptown
10AM • Wednesday, July 31

Everyone loves the Seattle Center — home of the Bubbleator, Food Circus, Fun Forest, SkyRide, and of course, the SuperSonics!

We're not going to any specific event at the Center. We'll just low-key stroll the grounds, maybe toss a frisbee, watch the juggling hyenas, have lunch at the food court,  etc.

Burke Museum
4303 Memorial Way NE, University District
10AM • Thursday, August 1

See what's the latest in artistic fraud, or art — you decide which is which!

Museums have to be air conditioned to protect the artifacts and art, so you get a little culture, and stay cool.

The Burke is free on the first Thursday of every month, and this is the first Thursday.

Backpacks are not allowed.

Breakfast at Little Pat's
13611 Ambaum Blvd SW, Burien
9:45 Friday, August 2
(Yup, breakfast is now on FRIDAYS)

Time of the Heathen (1961)
at Grand Illusion Cinema
1403 NE 50th Street, University District
4:15 • Saturday, August 3

This is a movie I've never seen or even heard of, so who knows, it might suck. It sounds weird, though, and I like almost anything weird except Republicans.

The theater is pre-ADA, up a flight of stairs with no elevator option.

Tickets $12, or $9 for seniors. Masks required.

Y'all come back now, y'hear?
There's a new post every two weeks.
